Facebook.inc announces it’s new company name: Meta
Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced on Thursday, 28th October 2021 that it has changed its company name to Meta.
The name change was announced at the Facebook Connect augmented and virtual reality conference.
The company is trying to refocus away from social media and toward building what it calls the metaverse.
“Today we are seen as a social media company, but in our DNA we are a company that builds technology to connect people, and the metaverse is the next frontier just like social networking was when we got started,” Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg said.
The metaverse will feel like a hybrid of today’s online social experiences, sometimes expanded into three dimensions or projected into the physical world.
It will allow you to enjoy immersive experiences with others even when you are unable to be physically present with them — and to do things together that you would not be able to do in the actual world. It’s the next step in a long series of social technology, and it marks the start of a new era for our business. In a founder’s letter, Mark elaborated on this concept.
Our annual Connect conference brings together developers, content creators, marketers, and others to celebrate the industry’s momentum and progress.
This year’s virtual event looked at how people would interact in the metaverse over the next ten years, from social interaction to entertainment, gaming, fitness, work, education, and business.
It also revealed new tools that will assist individuals in creating for the metaverse, such as the Presence Platform, which will enable new mixed reality experiences on Quest 2, as well as a $150 million investment in immersive learning to train the next generation of creators.

Meta builds technologies that help people connect, find communities, and grow businesses.
When Facebook launched in 2004, it changed the way people connect. Apps like Messenger, Instagram and WhatsApp further empowered billions around the world.
Now, Meta is moving beyond 2D screens toward immersive experiences like augmented and virtual reality to help build the next evolution in social technology.
