Programming can be a fairly lonely profession only interacting with the computer for long stretches.
Programmers particularly like cats because cats’ nature is similar to that of a programmer; they are aloof, independent, curious, nocturnal, picky about people, and generally love to live life on their own terms.
Due to the number of hours that programmers spend coding, they tend to be engrossed with their work with little or no time to physically interact with humans so they tend to get a pet as solitary companion.
Although most people choose dogs as their pets, a large percentage of programmers prefer cats over the dog for several reasons which will be discussed below.
Reasons Why Programmers Love Cats
1. The Feline Allure
Feline allure refers to the attractiveness and fascination of cats.
Cats have this feline allure that draws people in. It could be their big cute eyes and small face making them look so cute like babies or their tiny tongue and fluffy body.
They are gorgeous with an irresistible level of cuteness and you just can’t help but love these creatures.

2. Just like codes, cats have fascinating complexities
Cats are never in your control and can be likened to a furry computer programs or systems that need to be properly observed to understand their nature.
However, programmers are always fascinated with complex things, and they are often intrigued to learn more about their pet.
3. Cats Are Co-loners
We can say programmers and cats both have similar views about life and society.
They both prefer a quite serene environment and can remain at one spot cohabiting peacefully.
Cats also love staying on their own, so they mostly don’t have an issue when their owner leaves the house for long.
They can be sitting quietly, keeping their cool while the programmer is coding but expect them to hop on you the moment they need your touch.
4. Cats Are Low Maintenance
Unlike dogs, cats do not require a lot of maintenance.
They do not need as much energy, attention, and training that dogs require.
Cats do not need to be let out several times in a day, and they do not need you to take them one walk frequently. This is one reason why a lot of programmers prefer cats over dogs.
Training a dog seems like a very tasking job for someone who just wants to focus on writing codes.
Scratch that, get me a cute kitten instead.
5. Cats are fun to watch
You can spend hours watching a cat play by itself as they are very creative and will not get bored easily.
Watching cats can give software developers inspiration for their work sometimes, particularly game developers.

6. Cat exhibits nocturnal behavior, a programmers’ fellow night owl
Just like programmers, cats are always awake at night.
They have different sleep-wake cycles than other animals and are often busy at night. This is because cats are crepuscular, which means they hunt and are active in the evening or early morning.
This cat behavior at night is sometimes called the night crazies and may cause lack of sleep for cat owners.
But that doesn’t seem to be a problem because programmers like working at night since it’s less noisy and devoid of environmental distractions.
Not a bad idea to have a late-night companion, welcome to the nightlife mate.
7. Cats are Independent
Just like a boss, cats are independent.
They do not need much attention as other pet animals. In fact, they love being on their own and doing things themselves and their own way.
8. Cats are wonderful companion
A cat can act as a programmer’s wife, child, and friend.
You can eat, sleep, and watch your favorite tv show with your cat.
When anxious about code errors, sliding your hands through their fluffy body and helps calm your nerves.
Cats can act like therapy animals, they are cathartic to talk to and they can meow and purr in return.

Scientific research actually shows that cats lower the risk of heart attacks in their owners.
A 10-year study of more than 4,000 Americans by researchers at the University of Minnesota’s Stroke Institute in Minneapolis finds out that owning a cat can reduce your risk of a heart attack by nearly one-third.
Shocking right?
With a cat by your side, you can never feel lonely.
Final Thoughts
Cats are the pet choice of most programmers because they are cute, calming and soothing to watch, curious, unpredictable, nocturnal, low maintenance and are good companions for people in a solitary or lonely profession.
