“Ohh, he’s a programmer; he must be filthy rich.”

So I thought before becoming a programmer.

No doubt, depending on your level of coding experience and where you work, you can either be wealthy, comfortable or just have enough money to take care of your major and current needs.

However, you’ll agree with me that it’s not always as rosy as it seems on the outside or as non-programmers visualize it to be.

There are different needs to be met; steady inflation affecting things like cost and standard of living and you’re expected to stand tall despite these happenings.

As a result, it’s ideal for one to have multiple sources of income to avert financial crises.

Programmers are creative humans; we think, innovate and then build.

It’s one thing to be a programmer, but it’s a different ball game to be a programmer with an entrepreneurial mindset and for you to be reading this article at this point in time, I believe you have what it takes to increase your finances.

In this article, we’ll be looking at 11 passive income ideas for programmers.

No BS, these are not random fluff from the internet but a deep dive into:

  1. Things I’ve tried as a programmer and had actual success with,
  2. New positive insight’s that I’m currently exploring
  3. Successful business ventures from work colleagues and in-house tech community
  4. A few personal interview with programmers that doing it right.

Without further ado, let’s get started.

What’s Passive Income?

An income source is said to be passive when it generates money on a re-occurring basis with minimal or no extra effort.

The only major recognized effort will be the one expended when setting it up.

The truth is;

There’s no such thing as 100% passive income as different ventures often require slight updates or just minimal work to keep it running.

In essence, passive income is an income source where you don’t have to directly exchange your time for money.

There are 3 core characteristics of passive income:

  1. Massive upfront investment of time and money.
  2. Generates income once completely set without active work
  3. Minimal effort to keep it running.

We’ll cover both the generally known ones and the passive income ideas that are not commonly known or explored yet.

For the different mentioned income ideas, we’ll look at 4 things.

  • How easy/difficult to get started,
  • How easy/difficult to make the 1st $100 from the business
  • How easy/difficult to maintain and keep it passive
  • Helpful resources and links to help you get started with any venture that interests you

Let’s start with the not-so-common ones.

1. Blogging/Technical Content Writing

Are you good at writing?

Can you disseminate helpful information with words?

Then blogging might just be your thing.

Just as you are reading this piece, thousands of developers consume the content available here on website hurdles.

As a skilled programmer, there are a lot of things other developers especially newbies can learn from you.

It can be your thought pattern, your processes/workflow or your expertise on a language.

Everyone, including professional programmers, use Google to find solutions to their coding problem.

In fact a survey conducted by Stack Overflow across 57,910 professional programmers shows that about a whooping 90% consult Google when stuck with a problem.

Contrary to popular belief, you really don’t need to be a 10x developer or advanced technical writer to start blogging.

At every level of expertise, there are always people below you that can benefit from what you know already.

How easy is it to get started with blogging:

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 5/5

It’s very easy to get started with blogging.

There are two ways you can go about this:

  1. Having your personal blog
  2. Utilizing writing platforms like Medium, Dev.to, and Hashnode.

The choice is yours but I’ll outline the core difference between the 2 approaches.

Hashnodes and Dev.to are more developer friendly but since our focus is on passive income, the partners’ program of Medium makes Medium the best pick among the listed writing platforms.

To get started with Medium, you’ll need to create an account and write helpful content.

To earn, you’ll need to get your articles published in major medium publications by simply submitting the article to be reviewed.

The catch here is to send your articles to as many top publications as possible, I’d recommend not less than 15.

Medium made it easy to focus on just writing, a good starting point but if you want to be completely in charge of your blog as well as increase your earning possibilities then you can set up your own personal blog.

A personal blog will require more effort to set up, you’ll have to buy a domain, pay for hosting, whip up a standard site on WordPress and do all necessary customization.

To better streamline this process, we partnered with Bluehost and with as little as the price of a cup of coffee from Starbucks, you can get your personal blog up and running in an hour.

I created a separate article to guide you if you wish to walk down this route here: How to start a profitable blog.

How easy for you to earn the first $100 from blogging?

⭐️⭐️⭐️ 3/5

It took me 3 months to earn the 1st $100 via blogging.

About 70% were from affiliate commissions and the remaining $30 was from premium Google Adsense.

At that time, I was in my university finals, dabbling between engineering projects and running the blog.

As a university finalist, I didn’t put in much effort as I wished but I had a lot of competitive advantage owing to my SEO expertise which helped drive in a lot of organic traffic to my blog that converted to affiliate and ads earning.

A year after, earnings spiked up to thousands of dollars and have seen tremendous growth thereafter.

Karim, the creator of After Nerd, a similar programming blog mentioned he earns about $1,500 – $2,000 from his blog.

I’d say the good thing about blogging on a personal website is that your income grows exponentially on a monthly basis as long as you have the right processes checked and you publish consistently.

The major driver of blog traffic are SEO for organic traffic and Pinterest when applicable.

How easy is to be maintained as a passive income source? (⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️4/5)

You might not earn a dime in the 1st few months of blogging.

But when the cash start trickling in, it continues in an upward trend, popularly known as the hockey stick growth.

With quality content, proper keyword research and SEO, you can easily earn continually from a blog that’s already generating income without little or no additional effort.

You can’t be updating your blog with new content once in 2 months and expect to see any result.

Just like every hustle, to earn more, you simply just have to put in the work.

2. Online Courses

You can create a course around anything you’re good at.

A large number of people prefer video courses to written materials.

A recent report shows that more than 20 million new learners registered on Coursera in 2021 alone.

You won’t do well with online courses if you are camera shy.

Nevertheless, it’s a skill you can learn by recording personal short clips over time.

Some developers already have a knack for video tutoring. If that’s you, then you can give this a try.

You don’t really have to sell courses on your own hosted website unless you already have a large audience or following on social media.

If you don’t have any, you are better off utilizing major course platforms like:

  • Udemy
  • Skillshare
  • Teachable

SPOTLIGHT:

Dr. Angela Yu, a passionate developer and Udemy best-seller.

Angela has 1.7+ million registered students across 9 courses on Udemy and has made over $15 million.

Her courses cut across Python, Web development, App development, flutter, data science, and machine learning.

How easy is it to get started with creating online courses: (⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 3/5)

If you are already skilled at maintaining composure and eye contact with the camera and you speak fluently, then it’s pretty much easy to get started with online courses.
Here are a few things you’ll need to get started:

  1. Course topic research which is dependent on your expertise
  2. Ensuring market demand
  3. Filming, recording and editing equipment

Here’s a step-by-step guide by Thinkific on creating and selling online courses.

How easy for you to earn the first $100 as a Course Creator? (⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 4/5)

Pretty easy if your course is a good one.

Depending on the price of the course you can achieve this in less than 10 – 15 sales.

You can tell a good course when you see one, the feedbacks and ratings are helpful signals.

The Udemy algorithm helps push quality courses to the top same as other course platforms.

It’s logical to study what makes other creators’ courses successful, you can apply the findings in yours with a sprinkle of your unique touch.

If you are self-hosting your course, then you’ll have to build sales funnels to drive more eyeballs to your course.

How easy is it to be maintained as a passive income source? ( ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 5/5)

Online courses are one of the most passive income streams when done right.

You certainly can’t make edits to already created and published courses.

However, since tech is ever-changing with new languages, programming stacks and frameworks on the increase you might want to keep some modules of your course updated with recent technologies or even create new courses.

3. Starting a YouTube Channel

Youtube has always been a goldmine for information and the 2nd largest search engine behind Google.

But so many people see starting a Youtube channel as a Herculean task only done by very special people or big brands.

Here are 4 common misconceptions about starting a Youtube Channel:

  1. It’s expensive; you’ll need a lot of money to invest in cameras, gears, mics and lightening
  2. I’m introverted, you’ll have to be an extrovert to create a youtube video
  3. You’ll need a certain unique type of personality to get started else your channel won’t grow.
  4. It’s too late to start a Youtube channel because it’s saturated and all topics are already covered.

ALL WRONG

I’ll correct the misconceptions in the same order.

  • You don’t need a lot of money to get started as there are budget-friendly alternatives that can fast-track your growth.

For Camera – You can use a quality phone with a nice camera, phones like Samsung and even an iPhone 7 to a much more recent version will do the job.

For Lightening – Natural light with proper positioning, ring light can also be helpful during foggy periods.

For Mic – You can get a good Lavalier Microphone for under $10 on Amazon.

– Most introverts do well at Youtubing because come to think of it; unlike facing the crowd here you’re just talking directly to your camera.

And if you decide you don’t want to associate a face with the channel then you can start a  faceless Youtube channel.

– Every personality type is unique in it’s own way as different personalities appeal to different people.

You might just be surprised to discover there are tons of people that feel at ease learning from you.

– Not at all, with your unique touch, you can still start a channel and build a quality audience from scratch regardless of the competition.

The next big question is: If a create a channel, what will I talk about?

It all depends on your expertise.

It could be a development stack, helpful video guides for acing technical interviews, software engineering, web/app development etc;

You really don’t have to be a big brand like FreeCodeCamp before you start a channel.

SPOTLIGHT

Here’s a curated list of some programmers that I’m subscribed to on Youtube that are really killing it at the moment.

They single-handedly grew their channel from grass to grace.

You can go through their video collection for inspiration when ready.

How easy is it to get started with Youtube: (⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 3/5)

Here are the basic requirements (On a strict budget):

  • A good mobile Camera
  • Lavalier Mic
  • Ring Light

Apart from the gadgets, you’ll need to learn how to edit videos using video editing software.

There are tons of tutorials freely available online.

The best video editing software includes:

Final Cut Pro: For Mac Users

Adobe Premiere Pro: For Windows/Linux

Davinci Resolve: Any system type

How easy for you to earn the first $100 on Youtube? (⭐️⭐️⭐️ 3/5)

To get monetized on Youtube, you’ll need to hit 1k subscribers and 4,000 watch hours.

On average, someone posting 1-3 quality informative videos per week, consistently can get monetized in about 3 – 6 months.

I’ve seen people receive their 1st $100 Youtube Adsense paycheck in just 4 months of starting out, there are also people that don’t make a dime in their 1st year of starting out.

It all depends on certain factors like:

  • Quality video
  • CPC/RPM
  • Channel/Topic Niche
  • Uploading Consistency

Apart from Youtube Adsense, there are other means of monetizing a channel like:

  • Affiliate Marketing
  • Brand Deals and Sponsorship
  • Product/Mech Sales

How easy is it to be maintained as a passive income source? (⭐️⭐️⭐️ 3/5)

Youtube is not really all that passive because a lot of work goes into video creation, editing and post-production.

But once a channel is monetized, you can continue making money from uploaded videos all day long.

4. Digital Products

What’s that one thing you are good at?

You can create one or multiple digital products around it.

The word “digital products” means anything that can be sold online; but here I’m specifically referring to e-books, cheatsheets, templates and info products in general.

I interviewed a developer who sells a DevOps ebook for $29, it’s more like a guide for beginners and the majority of his sales comes from his Twitter audience; he makes about $1,300 monthly.

Not just programming, you can sell info products around anything utilizing platforms like Gumroad and Etsy.

SPOTLIGHT

Easlo; a 20-year-old solopreneur making $150k+ per year selling Notion templates.

How easy is it to get started with creating a digital product: (⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 5/5)

Very easy, you can whip up a digital product within a day.

It all depends on the nature of the digital product.

A 20+ page ebook can span weeks or a month to get completed.

How easy for you to earn the first $100 from digital products? (⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️4/5)

The star rating says it all, I’ll leave the rest for you to find out when you launch your own digital product.

How easy is it to be maintained as a passive income source? (⭐️⭐️⭐️3/5)

With a steady influx of traffic to your sales page, you can keep the earnings passive for a long time.

5. Website Themes and Templates

This has proven to be a very profitable side income hustle for programmers.

You can sell website themes, templates and plugins on:

  • Theme Forest
  • Site Point
  • Template Monster
  • Mojo Marketplace
  • Creative Market
  • Themesnap
  • Codester

CMS website themes and templates sales are booming and you should consider looking into it.

Apart from general sales platforms, you can also sell directly to the individual CMS marketplace.

For example, you can sell:

  • E-commerce themes on Shopify marketplace
  • Ghost website themes on Ghost marketplace
  • Tumblr website themes on Tumblr marketplace
  • WordPress website themes on WordPress.org

Another valid piece of information:

Do you know that templates are best sold on the parent theme marketplace?

I’ll give you an example; let’s use WordPress.

There are various nice WordPress themes like Divi from Elegant themes, Astra, and Elementor.

Let’s say you are familiar with Astra and can professionally set up a website using the Astra theme.

You can use your programming and creative skills to create Astra templates and child themes that will be sold on the Astra theme marketplace.

By so doing, theme users who wish to save a lot of customization time can purchase your template after buying the theme license and get their site running in no time.

Passive income ideas for software developers

SPOTLIGHT

Oliur created a Tumblr theme in 2014 and listed it on Tumblr marketplace.

Ever since then, he has made over $650,000 in sales from just this one theme.

According to Oliur, a large percentage of the money was made within the 1st 3 years when Tumblr was much popular and trending.

Now he makes anywhere from $500 – $2,000 monthly without having to do anything.

The theme was only listed on the Tumblr marketplace for Tumblr theme users with no extra marketing.

This is a good example of how programmers can make passive income with zero audience.

How easy is it to get started creating website themes and templates: (⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️4/5)

Considerably easy. Steal this 8-step guide:

  1. Choose a niche and design your theme
  2. Develop your theme using responsive design principles
  3. Follow the selected CMS best coding practices
  4. Include appropriate theme templates
  5. Create a user-friendly theme option page
  6. Create clear theme documentation
  7. Choose a theme marketplace
  8. Price your theme and start selling

How easy for you to earn the first $100 from website themes and templates?  (⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️4/5)

Upload your website themes and template to a suitable marketplace and leverage on their traffic to make sales.

If you have an audience, you can promote and share links to attract more eyeballs.

How easy is it to be maintained as a passive income source?  (⭐️⭐️⭐️3/5)

A quality website theme/template on a popular theme marketplace with good reviews and feedback from users will continually attract more sales.

For longevity purposes, you’ll need to maintain it regularly and fix bugs as it arises.

6. Selling Codes, Scripts and Plugins

Apart from CMS themes, you can directly sell programming codes, scripts and plugins on websites like Code Canyon.

You can sell code and script for Bootstrap, Javascript, PHP, HTML5, Mobile/Andriod app templates and more.

SPOTLIGHT

Here’s an appointment booking and scheduling software system plugin designed by Ladela.

It sells for $89 at Code Canyon.

At the point of writing this article, it has done 46,047 sales which amount to over $4,000,000.

7. API Development

There’s an API for almost anything these days.

A brief overview:

API stands for Application Programming Interface. It enables applications to talk to each other.

For example:

Using Tiktok API, I can display Tiktok feeds on this website.

With the API, we can interact with Tiktok from other applications, we can retrieve information from the platform as well as uploading videos to Tiktok from other applications through the API.

There’s an increase in demand for API services due to the rise of software applications.

Selling API is a good passive income idea for developers and if the API is in huge demand, it can become a start-up company.

How easy is it to get started with creating APIs: (⭐️⭐️⭐️ 3/5)

There are 4 steps in creating and selling an API:

Step 1: Come up with an idea that solves a real-life problem.

This is arguably the hardest part.

Here are some API examples to help your brainstorming phase.

WorldTime API – A simple web service that returns the local time for a given timezone as either JSON or plain HTML.

Spott API – Allows you to search cities, countries and administrative divisions by name, autocompletion or IP.

DarkSky API – A weather forecast API that returns the current weather conditions on an hourly, daily and weekly basis.

Currency Converter API – Provides currency exchange rates based on the markets and national central banks’ data.

AeroDataBox API – Gets information about the status of the nearest flight or about flights departing/arriving on the day specified (local time).

Receipt-Food-Nutrition API – Gives you to access to thousands of recipes, store-bought packaged foods, and chain restaurant menu items.

Step 2: Build the API

You’ll need extensive knowledge of languages like Javascript, node.js, express, json and core development tools.

Depending on what you’re working on, you might need a data source from governmental or official websites, you can access get this by conducting indepth research on Google.

If you have never built an API before, you can check out this video by Developer Ania Kubow, it will serve as an introductory guide: Build API

Step 3: Host the API

Here are the top platforms that help you host your API so that everyone on the internet can access it.

  1. Cloudflare Workers
  2. AWS Lambda
  3. Virtual Machine (EC2)
  4. Website services like Fly.io

Step 4: Sell the API

For this you can use the popular API Marketplace where thousands of APIs are sold called Rapid API

How easy for you to earn the first $100 from Building APIs? (⭐️⭐️⭐️3/5)

It can be easy if your API solves a pain point.

Rapid API has over 1.3 million monthly visits so you don’t have to bother about sourcing for sales so you can focus on building a valuable API.

How easy is to be maintained as a passive income source? (⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 5/5)

I’ll give this a 5 star because very little or no work is required after you’ve published your API on the marketplace.

Post API development work mostly involves creating new versions of the API which is often a no-brainer.

No code tool – Retool.com/utilities

8. Creating Chrome Extension

Yes, you heard me right, you can make money from creating Chrome extensions.

Google Chrome extensions are add-ons that give your browser more added functionality.

Google has a marketplace with over 180,000 Chrome extensions that anyone can view and use.

Over 300 Million users visit Google’s marketplace to discover extensions that fit their needs.

This means Google does the heavy lifting for you in terms of marketing.

There are Chrome extensions for pretty much anything you can imagine cutting across security, crypto, video recording, grammar editing etc.

SPOTLIGHT

Our spotlight radar here shines bright at Kim Dang who has earned over $1M from her Chrome extension called Group Convert.

It has over 4,000 installs and ranges from $10 – $17 per month.

Kim’s extension helps Facebook group owners collect emails from Facebook users upon group entry.

How easy is it to get started with creating Chrome extensions: (⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️4/5)

To do this, you’ll need:

  • An index.html file
  • Javascript file and
  • Manifest.json where you’ll store the metadata about your Chrome extension.

You’ll be surprised to find out that building Chrome extension is much more easier than you think.

And just like creating API’s, the major hurdle here is to find a pain point that will be tackled with your extension and people are willing to pay for it.

If you are new to this, then check out Tiffany’s short video on creating Chrome extensions.

How easy for you to earn the first $100 from Building Chrome Extensions? (⭐️⭐️⭐️ 3/5)

 – Solves a problem ✔️

– Has market value ✔️

– Listed on Chrome web store tick ✔️

If you have these 3 criteria ticked then you’re on the right path to making your 1st $100 and much more.

How easy is it to be maintained as a passive income source? (⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 5/5)

Just a couple of updates like getting it accessible across different major browser types, adding more features and increasing it’s market value.

9. Creating Bots

This can be any type of bot ranging A.I bots, crypto trading bots, social media management bots, chatbots etc.

Chatbots are popular in the web industry and are designed to perform conversations with humans.

They are commonly used in customer assistance, FAQs, and gathering user information.

Chatbots use programming languages like Lisp, Clojure, or Java.

There’s also an increased demand for bots in the e-commerce industry for customer services band major integral operations.

Many product-related businesses have seen the importance of creating communities around their product.

This has led to an increased demand for Discord and Telegram bots used by top firms to moderate large groups.

How easy is it to get started with creating Bots: (⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️4/5)

Quite simple.

Bots are created with programming languages like Python, Ruby, C++, Clojure and PHP.

First, find your target audience.

Which category of businesses are in dire need of the bot you intend to create? Let’s see.

  • E-Commerce Stores
  • SPA and Gyms
  • Real Estate Agents
  • Car dealers
  • Course Creators
  • Crypto Trading Companies
  • Coaches and Consultants
  • Health & Fitness Experts
  • Social Media & Marketing Agencies
  • Bloggers & Online Business Owners
  • And many more..

After you’ve discovered your target audience, conduct research to see what’s currently available.

Are the available bots in the specified niche something you can improve upon?

Is there a particular pain point you wish to address?

Get to work and start building.

How easy for you to earn the first $100 from Creating Bots? (⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️4/5)

Bots are been sold anywhere from $500 to $10,000 depending on it’s complexity.

Since you know your target audience, you’ll have to reach out to them when the product is available.

Just one successful sale is enough validation when conversing with other clients and will lead multiple sales.

How easy is to be maintained as a passive income source? (⭐️⭐️⭐️ 3/5)

Not all that passive because you’ll have to get involved in marketing processes and in many cases hop on calls with clients.

But the good part is; you build once and sell multiple time and the marketing get easier when you’ve built an audience that knows, use and trust your product.

10. Launching an iOS and Android Application

This passive income hustle is specifically tailored to mobile app developers.

A lot of apps are been launched daily on Playstore and App Store but only a handful are successful as a result of the high competition.

According to statistics, there are 4 million apps and 984,000 games on Apple’s app store and almost 3 million applications on Google Play.

How easy is it to get started with creating Mobile Apps: (⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 4/5)

Mobile applications are built using programming languages like Flutter, Swift, Dart, Kotlin and Objective C.

Additionally, game developers will have to be familiar with game creation tools and technologies like:

How easy for you to earn the first $100 from your App? (⭐️⭐️ 2/5)

Getting your app revenue strategy figured out before you start app development is crucial.

Without nailing down your app monetization models, you could end up wasting time and money.

Making money from your app is not an easy feat.

Generally speaking, apps make money in the following ways:

  • In-app purchases
  • In-app advertising
  • Sponsorships
  • Affiliate links

App downloads don’t necessarily translate to earnings.

From findings, most apps are successful either because it’s built by a popular brand or the creator has a hugh following on Youtube or other platforms.

That doesn’t mean your app won’t take off if you don’t fall under this category but just be aware it’s going to be aware of the challenges ahead.

How easy is it to be maintained as a passive income source? (⭐️⭐️⭐️ 3/5)

A successful app will keep on generating income depending on the monetization strategy.

Applications with active users and re-occurring monthly subscriptions appear to have struck gold in the mobile app development industry.

11. Creating a SAAS or Micro SAAS

SAAS – Software As A Service

SaaS is a way of delivering applications over the Internet—as a service.

Instead of installing and maintaining software, you simply access it via the Internet, freeing yourself from complex software and hardware management.

Micro SaaS are products that focus on very specific need, typically in a niche market.

SaaS/Micro Saas products can be described as the holy grail of passive income for programmers and developers as it can lead to very high returns when done right.

Examples of popular SaaS products include:

  • ClickUp for project management.
  • Zendesk for live chats.
  • Lead pages for landing page creation.
  • Whatagraph for marketing reports.
  • JotForm PDF Editor for automatic PDF creation.
  • Bit.ai for file and document management
  • Bitly for link management
  • Carrd for building one-page websites

How easy is it to get started with creating a Saas Product: (⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 4/5)

Very achievable, steal this 8-step road map when creating your SaaS product:

  1. Pick your market/niche
  2. Get ideas for your product
  3. Validate your idea
  4. Build your MVP (Minimum Viable Product)
  5. Find a way to automate almost all part of the business
  6. Determine your pricing model and payment option
  7. Launch on your selected platform
  8. Promote aggressively

How easy for you to earn the first $100 from your SaaS?  (⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 5/5)

$100 earning seems like a joke to viable SaaS products that are properly promoted.

As a developer, you can 50x – 100x this amount upon launch leveraging on your already built network and connections.

How easy is it to be maintained as a passive income source? (⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 4/5)

To achieve a high degree of passivity, focus on automating your processes.

Thankfully, we now have a lot of integration tools and software like Zapier that does the heavy lifting behind the scenes.
